The John Lewis opening has been one of the biggest events in Cheltenham this year. Everybody has been talking about it and now the day has come, what has been the reaction?
We spoke to customers leaving the store to see what they thought of Cheltenham’s newest addition who gave us mixed messages.
Andrea Beard seemed to like it, but didn’t seem ‘too fussed’:
“I’m not too fussed by the shop but I’ve popped down just to check it out – it’s a nice addition to the town isn’t it? I can’t imagine I’ll be in often but I suppose it’ll be useful for certain things like gifts.”
Karen Davies was a lot more excited after queuing since 9:00:
“I joined the queue this morning at 9am and I’m really glad I did, it’s absolutely beautiful inside. I can’t wait to do my Christmas shopping this year – I usually head down to the Bristol John Lewis so this will be ideal.”
Social media has had many reactions to the event. But these are some of the best.
It’s here!

Some people are not convinced, claiming that the store will still be there tomorrow.
I can’t believe people are queuing to get into John Lewis. It’ll still be there tomorrow! It’s sad that clearly that is the most exciting thing in Cheltenham right now.

The first person to arrive at the new John Lewis store was a man called Reg Lee. He was queuing outside from 7:30 this morning.
John Lewis is now open in Cheltenham.
The first customer was local man Reg Lee.
“I got here at 7:30am – I’ve never been to a shop opening before and this one is the talk of the town! There is a handbag I’ve got my eye on for my wife.”
Now that’s commitment.. pic.twitter.com/ZsKsikXv4B

That new John Lewis shop is literally about half the size of Cheltenham

People queuing from 7:30am for the 10am opening of the new John Lewis- the most Cheltenham thing to ever happen to Cheltenham. pic.twitter.com/Tu6IcJyAQn

Has the opening been overrated? Some think that Cheltenham have been relying on John Lewis too much. Will the Cheltenham store fail compare to the Gloucester stores?
I’m not soooo sure – I think #Cheltenham needs to up its game & is relying on the new John Lewis too much – otherwise it looks jaded/tired and WiLL fall behind #Gloucester … and all who love her & love her cotton bobble socks https://t.co/Fr4hjeFs3U

John Lewis has launched a unique idea to allow costumers to have the entire store to themselves. But there’s a catch…
John Lewis has launched a private and personal shopping service at its store in Cheltenham allowing customers to book out the whole shop to themselves after it has closed. Proviso: shoppers will have to spend a minimum of £10,000 😱

Will October the 18th be one for the history books? Comedian Dom Joly seems to think so.
What a day in history… Canada legalises weed and Cheltenham opens a John Lewis. Our ancestors will talk of this…
