As university students across the country find themselves already in the middle of their first term, for many, their student loan is already long gone. Statistics from The Scholarship Hub show that 11% of students nationwide will have spent their entire term’s loan within the first two weeks of studying, and a further 51% will spend it before the end of term.
While it’s important to learn how to manage money for the future, student deals and discounts are a great way to save some money before the next loan drops – and luckily for UoG students, Cheltenham High Street has them in abundance.
1. Everyman Theatre

16-25 year olds can grab two tickets to a show at Cheltenham’s largest theatre for just £5 each. The scheme runs all year round in a bid to encourage youngsters and students to experience live theatre by helping with ticket costs. Showing everything from hit-musical Thriller to ballet classic Swan Lake, the £5 ticket scheme is definitely a bargain.
2. Superdry
It wouldn’t be Cheltenham without Superdry, and few students can afford to shop there without a discount. Luckily, the store offers 10% off to students all year round, so you can grab yourself a t-shirt that screams “I’m from the Cotswolds!” and wear it with pride. With a huge store right in the middle of the High Street, it’s hard to avoid.
3. Dominos
Need a plan B for tea? Students turn to these options because they really are so cheap, and Dominos (on the lower Highstreet), go one step further, offering buy-one-get-one free pizzas exclusively for students – exclusively online.
4. Yo! Sushi
Fans of all things sushi are in for a treat, with Yo! Sushi in the centre of town offering students 25% off the whole bill. The offer stands five days a week (except Monday and Saturdays) all year round, meaning you can enjoy your favourite rolls/katsu curry/teriyaki salmon knowing you’re getting a pretty hefty discount at the end of it.
5. DW Gym
If you already have an existing gym membership, it’s worth taking a look to see if your gym offers any student discount. DW gym (located in the Brewery Quarter) gives students a discount of £10 per month if they buy a yearly membership – just remember to take your student card when you purchase it.
6. Phone deals
Few people know that most high street phone companies offer students discount on their monthly phone bills, so if your contract is coming to an end or you already have a SIM-only plan, head into the store and ask your provider about what they can do for you. EE already offer 20% off and Vodaphone 10%, which will amount to a pretty large discount across the year.
7. STA Travel
Another lesser-known way of bagging a deal is through the Student Travel Association. Though a largely online based firm, they do have a small shop on the high street and offer huge discounts on flights, package trips and even work-away schemes – all exclusively for students. Check out their website or pop in for a chat with one of their advisors if you’re planning a trip.
