The Future of Nightlife in Gloucestershire

Club culture has undoubtedly been on the decline, with theĀ Association of Licensed Multiple Retailers (ALMR) reporting that the number of nightclubs in the UK has fallen to 1,733 from 3,144 in 2005. Iconic clubs of the past such as the Hacienda and Gatecrasher have had their last dance, but the recent permanent closing of Fabric has left club culture at an institutional loss.

The closure of Fabric was the result of two teenagers dying drug use on the premises; but looking to Gloucestershire, is there a risk of nightlife diminishing and venues closing their doors?

2 Pigs is an alternative nightclub in Cheltenham that has been running for over 20 years, making it one of the oldest venues in the town. The venue prides itself on keeping their image original through all these years despite the saturated market. Speaking with venue promotor Sian, she expresses her views on how the clubbing industry may be by 2020.

Although in this instance spirits seem high with the Cheltenham nightlife scene, it is rumoured that popular drum and bass club Subtone may be closing.
