Skillzone: Gloucester’s crime fighting life-size village

What would you do if a fire broke out in your house? Or you witnessed a robbery in your local shop? At Skillzone in Gloucester, you can learn how to safely deal with all these situations and more.

The state of the art facility, which includes a house, train station, corner shop and bus works as a training centre for emergency personnel, but also teaches members of the community how to recognise and cope with dangerous situations.

The centre works with people of all ages; from Year Five school pupils who are beginning to be independent but need some guidance, to elderly people that want to keep busy.

They also work with National Star College to help young adults with disabilities to keep themselves safe, in a contained and monitored environment.

Joshua Sanders, Volunteer Manager at Skillzone says that thanks to their efforts, the amount of fires and crashes in the area have been lowered.

Policing students at the University of Gloucestershire have been using the facility too, putting what they’ve learnt in the classroom to the test.

John Clay-Davis, the course leader for BSc Policing, says Skillzone is hugely beneficial to the student’s learning experience.

So despite the building having a very ordinary look, it has a lot to offer to the local community.
