Gloucestershire MP says ‘hands off my constituency’

Gloucestershire MP David Drew is campaigning to stop his constituency being broken up.

He has called on the government to drop a review of the boundaries of his Stroud parliamentary seat.

Dursley and Cam could be moved to a new parliamentary area should the review go ahead.

Boundary Reviews are completed every eight to twelve years.

The second consultation for the 2018 Review has just been completed and The Boundary Commission is currently analysing the public comments on the proposed changes.

The idea behind the suggestions is to even out the amount of voters represented by each MP.

The parliamentary boundary changes, which will see the number of MPs elected decrease from 650 to 600.

Mr Drew, 65, who won the seat from the Conservative Neil Carmichael in June’s General Election, has argued that the areas of Dursley and Cam should remain a part of his constituency, as opposed to moving to a new constiuency alongside Yate in South Gloucestershire.

Mr Drew previously represented Stroud in Westminster when Labour were last in power between 1997 and 2010, and won back the seat when Prime Minister Theresa May’s decision to call an election saw her lose her party’s majority, with Mr Carmichael a casualty.

You can still have your say, until Monday, about the Stroud district here.
