Education: Is education at home the best for children?

People say school is the best time of your life. The conventional 9-3 day of a pupil in primary school is not necessarily the only option if you want to get your child the best education possible.

57% of parents across England, Wales and Northern Ireland now home school their children. Almost a thousand children with recognised needs are waiting for a school place.

Parents with children in primary schools can write to the headteacher of the school if they plan to take their children out of school. The teachers must accept if the child is to be taken out completely, but may refuse if the parents want to have the child in school part-time.

Councils can help if the child has Special Educational needs. The school may not have the facilities to educate children with disabilities such as Autism, Dyslexia and other illnesses. The parents need to tell the school if the children have an education, health and care (EHC) plan.

The council can make an ‘informal enquiry’ to check the child is getting a suitable education at home. They can serve a school attendance order if they think the child needs to be taught in school.
