Drink-driver jailed after high speed chase

A banned driver who led police on a high-speed chase through Cheltenham on December 1 last year was jailed for 14 months on Thursday.

Mitchell Brigdale was over the drinking limit, and at one point punctured his tyres as he drove too fast over speed bumps but carried on with sparks flying from the wheel.

The chase went along Gloucester Road, Tennyson Road, Kipling Road, Brooklyn Road, Edinburgh Place, Princess Elizabeth Way, Marsland Road – where he stopped but then took off again – Beaumont Road, Hester’s Way Lane and Springbank Way, where he finally stopped and was arrested.

Brigdale, from Tewkesbury, pleaded guilty to: dangerous driving, having no insurance, being over the alcohol limit and driving while disqualified.

Judge Michael Cullum sentenced him to a total of 14 months in jail with a seven-month driving ban.

He said although the offence happened in the early hours of the morning when there were few people around, it could still have caused a “catastrophe”.
