Cheltenham town centre lights up for Christmas switch on

Cheltenham’s streets were packed with Christmas cheer last night, as locals gathered to witness the towns lights being switched on.

There was something for all ages of the family at the event, which covered three areas of the high street, as a very special appearance from Santa Claus headlined the evening.

Children had the chance to meet and have pictures with the man in the big red suit, who was joined by Olaf, Elsa and Princess Anna, stars from global film Frozen.

The lights switch on also offered a chance for shoppers to stock up on their Christmas gifts, as the Regent Arcade kept their doors open until 9pm for the opening week of late night shopping.

Lights were switched on in different sections of Cheltenham’s streets, as the Promenade kicked off the night with a spectacular array of white lights lining the trees of the towns hub.

Salvation Army play to Cheltenham's Promenade
The Salvation Army will feature regularly on Cheltenham’s streets in the run-up to Christmas Day.

Due to the continued development works on Cheltenham’s Brewery, their event was separate and featured a series of street performers and carol singers, as shoppers grabbed a late meal.

There was also a special appearance from the Salvation Army, who entertained thousands of people with their special take on jolly Christmas classics, that helped to warm up the crowds at a very chilly venue.

Cheltenham’s lights will remain switched on for the entire run-up to Christmas, and carol singers will also be making appearances every Thursday night for the next four weeks.

Shops across Cheltenham will remain open late on a Thursday for the same period of time, allowing locals some extra spending time ahead of the festive days.
