Cheltenham Ladies College grades take a tumble

Cheltenham Ladies College is among a number of elite private schools to fall down the exam rankings following the introduction of an overhauled A-Levels system.

With notable former students including Home Secretary Amber Rudd, former Conservative MP Cheryl Gillan and actress Talulah Riley, the girls school has dropped out of the so-called ‘90% club’ where 90% of grades achieved are Grade B and above.

At £11,870 per term, the girls school is the second most expensive school country, behind only Hurtwood House in Dorking, Surrey.

A place at the school, which was described as “excellent” in a 2014 report by the Independent Schools Inspectorate, is subject to entrance exams or A* grades at GCSE level.

The Sunday Times figures (see above) revealed that the number of students achieving grades A*-B has declined each year since 2015, seeing the school drop from 33rd highest to 74th in the Sunday Times school ranking.

However, Cheltenham Ladies College has seen an improvement in it’s GCSE results. The school has leaped 15 places from 47th in 2015 to 32nd in both 2016 and 2017, with over 90% of students achieving grades A*-B in 2017.
