Cheltenham drug mule spared firing squad

Cheltenham grandmother, Lindsay Sandiford, has been temporarily saved from a firing squad.

The news comes as a result of Indonesia’s top security minister revealing that there will be no death row executions in the near future.

Luhut Binsar Panjaitan told a news conference that the government’s priority was instead the country’s economic slowdown

Ms Sandiford, 59, who lived in Warden Hill, was sentenced in 2013 to death by firing squad, after being convicted of trying to smuggle 4.8kg of cocaine into Bali.

She claimed that she was blackmailed into smuggling the drugs, with a threat being made that her children in England would be harmed if she refused.

The Daily Mail reported that prison sources had said that Ms Sandiford was ‘thankful’ at the news, yet feared that she still may spend the rest of her life behind bars.
